ARC of Justice Series
The Great Michigan Read is an annual, statewide reading project that encourages Michiganians to read and discuss a specifically selected book. This reading season’s title is Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age by Kevin Boyle. Arc of Justice is the electrifying account of a real-life murder trial that resulted when Dr. Ossian Sweet, an African American physician, purchased a home in a white Detroit neighborhood in 1925. Dr. Sweet’s story is of epic proportion - the story of one man trapped by the issues of changing times.
Cartography of Race
Tuesday, March 13 - 6:30 pm
Dr. Matthew Daley, Associate Professor of History, Grand Valley State University, and expert on Detroit’s rapid urban growth from 1915 to 1945, has focused his research on urban public and social policy. The work that came out of his research is Cartography of Race: 1920s and 30s: Housing
segregation in Detroit and other Michigan cities at the time of the Sweet trial. Racial segregation of neighborhoods relied on restrictive covenants, signed by white home-owners that agreed they would neither rent nor sell to African-Americans.
Dr. Daley will lead us to a deeper understanding of this topic about which we may know little.
Arc of Justice
Tuesday, March 27 – 6:30 pm
Dr. Fred Johnson, History Professor, Hope College, will lead a discussion on Arc of Justice. See the forgoing
announcements for information related to this book discussion. Plan on attending this important and timely
event. You will benefit whether or not you’ve had an opportunity to read the book.
A related event... On Tuesday, March 6 at 10:30 am the Library Book Club will discuss Everyday Klansfolks by Craig Fox. The book deals with white protestant life and the KKK in 1920’s Michigan. The setting is Newaygo
County. Visitors are welcome to attend the Library Book Club discussion of this very significant book.
