Storytime for
Preschoolers
Storytime for young children ages three, four and five resumes on Wednesdays at 9:30 am starting September 14. Led
every Wednesday by Ms. Allison, Storytime consists of a time of sharing, games, songs and stories - followed a craft.
Sessions run through December 14 at which time there will be a Christmas break and will resume in January.
Call the library to register.
Drop-ins are welcome.
Two & Under Lap-sit Time
There’s something new at the library this fall: Two & Under Lap-sit Time. This will be a period of time during which parents or other caregivers will hold their little ones – 2 years old or younger – and Ms Allison will present lapsit games, songs and short age-appropriate books.
Two & Under Lap-sit Time begins Wednesday, September 14 at 11:15 am. This new event will follow the 9:30 am Storytime for Preschoolers and will run through December 14 at which time there will be a Christmas break. Lap-sit
will resume in January.

Spanish for Kids Is Back
Catalina Smeresky, a certified Montessori teacher and native of Peru, is again offering Spanish immersion classes for children ages 3 – 6. The 45-minute classes meet at 4:30 pm on
Mondays beginning on September 12 and continuing through November 7. There will be no class on Monday, October 31, Halloween day.

After School Movies
After School Movies continue with the first movie being shown on Thursday, September 22 at 3:15 pm. Special After School Scary Movie, showing on Thursday, October 27 in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Scarecrow Contest. Popcorn will be served at the After School Scary Movie. All after school movies are appropriate for elementary school children.
Pet Tales September Special for Children
Saturday, September 24 – 1:30
Come hear outrageous stories about pets in the library. Meet our very own Library Dog (a trained therapy pet) and the Library Guinea Pig. Take in the experience of reading to one our furry friends. Create your own pet rock to care for at home. For pre-school and
elementary age children and their

Hunger Games
Ann McLaughlin, reading specialist,
will be at the library this fall starting September 28 to lead a middle schoolers discussion group on the popular Hunger Games trilogy.

Shred Docs will have its mobile document destruction truck available at the library to provide fully confidential shredding services.
Shred Docs will shred up to 100 lbs of paper per person, ultimately turning your unwanted paper into dinner napkins.

Zippety 2 Dads –The Singing & Dancing Dads

Dads Shawn and Tagg are singers, writers and actors. They describe their style as more Beatles than Barney. Expect a time of fun, laughter, singing & dancing. With seven children between them these dads know what kids like. A family-fun concert.
Jan Alm - Psychic Librarian from Kalamazoo

At age 50, author Jan Alm began receiving messages from her deceased mother. One crazy, wonderful experience led to another and soon Jan was receiving messages from other’s departed loved ones as well. Jan will share stories of her spirit experiences and will teach techniques you can use to connect with your own loved ones on the Other Side. Signed copies of Jan’s book, Woo-Woo: Becoming a Psychic at Fifty will be for sale.

A WWII Film Series at the Walker Memorial Library

This year we will observe the 70th Anniversary of the December 7, 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor. Only a small percentage of US citizens can recall that fateful day. It was their 9/11 it led
to a war that enveloped all segments of our society. This series will, with a couple of diversions, concentrate on the “homefront” and on what happened when the boys went off to war and the
girls headed for the factories and offices. Hollywood movies reflected the change in our national social scene.
November 3 – Double feature
Buck Privates (1941) 84 min.
Abbott & Costello enlist in the army and report to boot camp. Also featuring the Andrews Sisters.
Why We Fight – Prelude to War (1942) 52 min.
Part 1 of Frank Capra’s series was produced for the army to explain to recruits the nature of the enemy. The whole series was shown in movie theaters across the county.
November 10 – Double Feature
Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror (1942) 65 min.
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Brooks time travel to the 1940’s to do their bit for the allied war effort by finding the source of the voice of terror invading the BBC.
Why We Fight – War Comes to America (1942) 52 min. The final installment of Capra’s series focusing on isolationism.
November 17 - Since You Went Away (1944) 52 min.
While her husband is away, Anne Hilton (Claudette Colbert) takes in a lodger (Monty Woolley) to help make ends meet while coping with teenage daughters (Jennifer Jones and Shirley
Temple).

Legendary director George Stevens takes a light-hearted look at the housing shortage in Washington, DC. Charles Coburn stars as cupid.

We look at the experiences of three nurses who served in the Philippines and cared for servicemen and veterans. Claudette Colbert, Paulette Goddard and Veronica Lake star.

The Friends of Walker Memorial Library sponsors an ongoing book sale in the lobby, which features an ever-changing inventory. Stop in to see what's new.

This is a one-day only sale. Gently used, sorted books. No library discards. “We accept donations,” says a member of the Friends. “Any day of the year, any time of the day,
as long as it’s during library open
hours.”
Designed by Friends’ member and treasurer, Kathy Myers, the baskets sell at reasonable prices of $5.50 and up. In addition to the baskets, you'll find three styles of book bags, note cards, two designs of 10 oz. beverage mugs and the 25th anniversary edition of the Proud Peninsula.
Instead of putting them into a garage sale or stacking them in the basement, please consider donating your used books to the library. Just drop them off at the desk. Thank you.
Summer was fun. Now perhaps it’s time to engage in some indoor activity. Join the Library Book Club. You can’t beat a good book and friends with whom to share it. On the first Tuesday of each month at 10:30 am from October – May, community members – both men and women – meet in the library to discuss the selection for the month. The list of titles for the year is member-selected. Attend one meeting and you will be convinced that the Library Book Club is the place to be. The 2011-2012 book selections are posted at the library
